How Jewelry Helps You Express Your Passion: A Fan's Perspective

What Is Subtle Nerd Jewelry, and Why Does It Matter?

Subtle nerd jewelry is jewelry that lets you celebrate what you love in a refined, elegant way, so you can wear your passions anywhere, including professional or formal spaces, without feeling loud, costume-y, or out of place.

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can wear is the part of yourself you were taught to hide.

What Happened at Founded in FoCo

This testimonial video came out of one of those moments that makes you stop and think, okay, maybe this message really is landing.

Jenn Rahn and I met at Founded in FoCo this year after I gave my 1 Million Cups presentation. During that presentation, I was talking about Charming Quail Jewelry Design, what the brand is about, and the deeper reason behind it all. We also had some conversation during the event about the importance of getting testimonials, not just from customers, but from people who genuinely connect with the message of the brand.

After the presentation, Jenn and I got to talking, hit it off, and kept digging deeper into the ideas behind Charming Quail. She had been really struck by what I was saying, and when I asked if she’d be willing to record a testimonial video, she was immediately up for it.

That meant a lot to me.

Not because I think every nice thing someone says should instantly become content, but because Jenn understood something very specific about what we’re building here. She understood that this brand is not just about making jewelry. It is about helping people celebrate what they love, and helping them do that in a way that feels elevated, beautiful, and wearable in everyday life.

Why Jenn Rahn’s Testimonial Hit So Hard

One of the things Jenn said in the video that really stuck with me was this idea that Charming Quail is creating space for people to be both.

Both professional and playful.

Both polished and passionate.

Both powerful and nerdy.

Both elegant and fully themselves.

That is exactly the tension I have been trying to solve.

There is plenty of nerdy merchandise in the world. There are lots of fun fandom things, loud novelty things, obvious statement things. And hey, there is absolutely a time and a place for loud and proud. But there are also a whole lot of people who want something different.

They want to celebrate what they love without sacrificing style.

They want to wear something meaningful without feeling like they are in costume.

They want something that feels classy, lasting, and artful, but still quietly says, yes, this is my thing.

That is the lane Charming Quail was built to live in.

Jenn articulated that so beautifully in the testimonial. She talked about how rare it is to see those two worlds married well, the formal world and the deeply personal world, the polished world and the hobby-loving, life-loving human underneath it all.

And honestly, hearing someone else say that out loud felt huge.

Why Subtle Self-Expression Matters

There is something kind of sad about the idea that once we grow up, we are supposed to stop showing what delights us.

As kids, we are basically living in show and tell mode all the time. Look at this cool thing. I love this. This matters to me. This is what I am excited about. And other kids respond. They get excited too. They connect. They ask questions. They find common ground.

Then adulthood rolls in and suddenly so many people feel pressure to become flatter versions of themselves.

Professional, but less expressive.

Appropriate, but less joyful.

Polished, but less personal.

I do not think that is a better way to live.

I think people deserve to celebrate the things they love. I think they deserve to carry those passions with them. I think they deserve beauty that reflects who they really are, not just what the room expects them to be.

And I think that is one reason Jenn’s perspective was so powerful. She talked about how our interests can become bridges. They can create connection. They can open conversations. They can remind us that we are not the only one in the room carrying that same love for sci-fi, gaming, corgis, fantasy, science, or whatever else lights us up.

That matters.

Why Charming Quail Exists

At its core, this brand exists because I believe people should not have to choose between elegance and authenticity.

You should not have to choose between looking refined and celebrating what you love.

You should not have to choose between wearing something beautiful and wearing something meaningful.

You should not have to choose between fitting into your life and bringing your real self with you.

That is the whole heartbeat of Charming Quail.

Yes, we are making beautiful jewelry.

Yes, we are creating elegant pieces.

Yes, craftsmanship and quality matter enormously.

But the deeper purpose underneath all of that is expression.

Not random expression.

Not chaos for the sake of standing out.

Not being loud just to prove a point.

Expression with intention.

Expression with beauty.

Expression with subtlety.

Expression that lets someone who knows, know.

That is the magic.

The Kind of Connection Jewelry Can Create

One of my favorite parts of Jenn’s testimonial was how she described jewelry as a bridge.

That idea hit home for me because I think a lot of adults are lonelier than they let on.

When we are younger, connection is baked into life. You are around peers all the time. You are constantly running into people in similar stages of life. But as adults, that gets more scattered. Different ages. Different schedules. Different responsibilities. Different paths. Even when you are surrounded by people, it can still feel weirdly hard to connect.

And that is one of the things a meaningful piece of jewelry can do.

It can start a conversation.

It can spark recognition.

It can create that little moment of, wait, you love that too?

That is not a small thing.

Jewelry can absolutely be beautiful on its own, but when it also creates belonging, memory, recognition, and community, that is when it becomes something bigger than an accessory.

That is when it starts becoming part of someone’s life story.

What “What If It All Goes Right” Means to Me

Jenn’s whole mantra, “What if it all goes right,” absolutely grabbed me.

I love it because it pushes back against a voice so many of us live with every day, that constant inner commentary of what if it fails, what if I mess this up, what if I am not good enough, what if this goes nowhere.

That voice gets loud when you are building something from scratch.

And building this business has absolutely been one of those experiences.

There is no tidy path. No neat little checklist. No guaranteed route from idea to sustainable brand. A lot of this has been me stepping forward, trying things, learning as I go, finding mentors where I can, and continuing to move even when I feel scared, uncertain, or out of my depth.

If I let myself camp out too long in everything that could go wrong, I would stall out. I would freeze. I would probably quit.

So while I have not specifically been walking around saying, “What if it all goes right,” I realized when Jenn said it that I have been reaching for that same mindset all along.

For me it looks like this:

What is the next baby step?

How do I keep moving forward?

How do I stop feeding the fear and start feeding the work?

That is one reason her message resonated with me so deeply. It is hopeful, yes, but not in a fluffy, ignore-reality kind of way. It is hopeful in a brave way. In a keep-going-anyway way.

And I think that spirit fits this brand beautifully.

How This Shows Up in the Work We’re Creating

Even though the whole brand is built around this idea of subtle, meaningful self-expression, one of the clearest current examples is a project I am working on right now for a couple who love Star Trek The Next Generation.

They wanted an anniversary ring inspired by the shapes of the comm badge from the show.

That right there is such a perfect Charming Quail kind of challenge.

How do we build something that honors their love for Star Trek The Next Generation, something true fans would recognize, while still making it elegant enough to wear anywhere?

That is exactly the kind of puzzle I love solving.

Right now, the prototype has been printed, the center stone is in, and I have computer renders ready to show the clients at our upcoming meeting. It's still in process, but it's already a great example of what this brand is meant to do.

Take something deeply personal.

Translate it into something beautiful.

Keep the meaning.Keep the elegance.

Make it wearable in real life.

That is the goal.

And that is also why Jenn’s testimonial felt so meaningful. She was seeing the heart of the brand, not just a single piece.

Why I’m Grateful to Jenn Rahn

I am really grateful to Jenn Rahn for taking the time to do this video.

She did not come at this as a customer review, and I actually think that makes this perspective valuable in a different way. This is not someone talking about a transaction. This is someone talking about the message, the mission, and the reason this kind of jewelry deserves to exist.

That matters too.

It matters when people can see the vision.

It matters when they can put language to what makes your work different.

It matters when they can reflect back something you have been trying to build, and say, yes, this is why this feels important.

Jenn also shared that she'd like to host Charming Quail on her podcast, and we are currently working on scheduling that recording. I am excited about that, too, because I think there is so much overlap between her message and mine, especially around possibility, identity, courage, and building a life that actually reflects who you are.

Closing Thoughts

The longer I do this, the more convinced I become that people are hungry for permission.

Permission to love what they love.

Permission to stop shrinking.

Permission to be elegant AND nerdy. Not or.

Permission to be polished AND personal.

Permission to show up as a whole human.

That is what I want Charming Quail to offer.

Not just jewelry, but a way to carry your story with you.

A way to celebrate what lights you up.

A way to feel that little jolt of excitement that says, oh wow, somebody gets me.

And if that sounds like your kind of thing, you can explore our jewelry at www.charmingquail.com/category/all-products.

Because life is too short for jewelry that says nothing.

Embrace ∞ Nerdy.
