The Charming Quail Is Becoming Quite a Character
We recently hired a new brand ambassador. Her name is Francesca, but she said you can call her Fran, and she’s a quail. A very cute quail. I wanted to give Charming Quail™ a little more personality, and now I’ve got a quail to get to know, stories I want to tell, and a freighter pilot who would really like to get back to her video game. Apparently, my nerdy jewelry has company.

Fran has joined the team
I like the Charming Quail logo. I think it looks good, it looks professional, and there’s actually quite a bit going on in that little design. But we’ll get into that another day.
I just kept thinking it could be more fun. Could we give this quail enough personality that someone would see her and think, “I don’t know what this guy does, but that quail is so cute. I want to be part of this”?
And that’s how we got Fran.
I picked Francesca because it felt fun and fancy for no particular reason at all. I liked the sound of it. She’s our new brand ambassador, and we’re still getting to know each other.
A lot of the inspiration came from my friend Sheri-Lauren’s Fluffy Birds collection. I absolutely love those birds. They’re so cute, and they got me thinking about what I could do with my own quail, in my own style. Take a look at her Jubilant Blue painting, and you’ll see what I mean.
Sheri-Lauren and I sat down recently and recorded a little conversation about Fran and some of the other things I’ve been working on. We thought it would be fun to share.
A new creative side quest
I want these characters to give you another fun way to connect with Charming Quail. And honestly, I’m also really excited to have another creative outlet.
There are a lot of things to consider when you’re designing jewelry. Can we actually make this? How much is it going to cost? Is it going to be comfortable to wear?
With a story, I have a little more room to play. I can send someone to the far reaches of space without first working out how much the spaceship would cost in platinum.
My brother-in-law is working on a book that leads into a board game you can play to finish the story. I’ve been reading it, and I really like the world and characters he’s built. It’s made me want to try my hand at that, too.
More heroines to get excited about
My wife loves comic books, fantasy novels, and everything from Princess Leia and Xena to the Golden Girls. That’s an excellent range.
One thing that frustrates her is how hard it can be to find good female characters she really likes. We’ve talked about that a lot, and it’s something I keep thinking about as I work on these stories.
I want to create more women she’d be excited to read about. Women with their own interests, personalities, and adventures. And I hope you’ll enjoy getting to know them, too. I’d love for you to finish a post and want to know what happens to her next.
My wife is helping me figure a lot of this out. She’s an inspiration, but she’s also someone I trust to read what I’m working on and give me honest feedback. I’m having fun sharing these ideas with her and working through them together.
Meanwhile, somewhere in deep space
Lana is a freighter pilot who works out in the quieter reaches of space, where she can mostly be left alone to play her video games and read her books.
Of course, there are occasional pirates to deal with. She likes a little adventure, too.
I’m developing her alongside the video game-inspired Player 1 collection. As I work on the jewelry, it’s fun to imagine who would wear it. What does she like? What’s her life like? What’s she doing when she isn’t dealing with space pirates?
