Victorian Chiroptera: From Sketch to Spooky Victorian Necklace

The Victorian Chiroptera Necklace began as a Halloween Art Walk idea with a wonderfully specific challenge: design a bat-inspired piece of fine jewelry that felt gothic, elegant, and a little mysterious without becoming costume jewelry.

The design grew out of a world of vampire stories, Victorian nature jewelry, purple amethyst, and the quiet drama of a bat hanging by its thumbs. Rather than sculpting a detailed animal with a head, feet, and tail, the necklace simplifies the bat into flowing wings, claw-like prongs, and an octagonal amethyst that becomes the body of the piece.

Small details carry the story forward. The chain connects where the bat’s thumbs would be, making the pendant feel as if it is suspended in its own natural pose. A notch in one wing suggests this bat has lived a little and has stories tucked into the dark. The magnetic clasp adds a thoughtful, practical detail, making the necklace easier to put on and remove while avoiding the tiny moving parts of a traditional lobster clasp.

The project also inspired a collaboration with artist Sheri-Lauren, who created a drawing of a black cat wearing the necklace. That playful crossover helped extend the design’s world beyond the jewelry bench and into a little shared Halloween mythology of its own.
